Metropolitan Michael of Austria and Exarch of Hungary and Mid-Europe passed away.

He was born in Athens on November 22, 1946. He was elected as Assistant Bishop of the Orthodox Metropolitanate of Austria by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on November 5, 1985 and in 1991 he was elevated to the rank of Metropolitan.

He was awarded with the Golden Commander’s Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria. He received the honorary distinction in honor of his long service as Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and President of the Episcopal Conference in Austria, and especially for his contribution and support towards the integration of the Orthodox faith in the Austrian Community.
